William Kentridge war erstmals in Österreich 1996 in der von Peter Weibel kuratierten Ausstellung "Inklusion:Exklusion" im steirischen herbst in Graz zu sehen. In den letzten Jahren war Kentridge in zahlreichen Großausstellungen vertreten, den Biennalen von Sydney, Johannesburg, Istanbul und Havanna, der documenta X, Kassel 1997, der Biennale von Sao Paolo, 1998 und der Biennale von Venedig 1999. 

Die gegenwärtige Ausstellung ist die erste große Retrospektive des 1955 in Johannesburg geborenen südafrikanischen Künstlers und gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über sein Schaffen von den ersten frühen Animationsfilmen aus der Serie "Drawings for Projection - Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City after Paris" (1989) bis zu "Weighing... and Wanting" (1998). Die Ausstellung ist darauf konzentriert, mittels Wandmalereien, die für jeden Ausstellungsort als eigene Installation neu realisiert werden, Film- bzw. Laserprojektionen und der Präsentation der Zeichnungen, die dann in verschiedenster Weise in den Film- und Theaterprojekten zur Anwendung kommen, die spezifische Arbeitsweise dieses Künstlers, dessen Werk geprägt ist von der Geschichte seines Landes und der Konfrontation mit der Apartheid, deutlich werden zu lassen. Nach den Stationen Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel, dem Kunstverein München, der Serpentine Gallery in London, dem MACBA in Barcelona und La Vieille Charité in Marseille eröffnet die Neue Galerie Graz mit diesem internationalen Star der Kunstszene, der 1999 auch im Project Room des MoMA in New York in einer Personale zu sehen war, ihre neu renovierten Räume im 1. Stock.
