Accessibility at the Universalmuseum Joanneum

We have made it our aim to be a ‘museum for all’ and we want to make the Universalmuseum Joanneum accessible to everyone, where conditions permit (e.g. taking account of our protected monument status). Everyone should be able to visit our locations and the various exhibitions and parks.

The following museums have already been assessed by CEDOS (partner network for accessibility) to ensure they are accessible:

Kunsthaus Graz

Schloss Eggenberg (State Rooms, Park, Alte Galerie, Archaeology Museum, Coin Cabinet)

Joanneum Quarter (Neue Galerie Graz, Multimedia Collections, Natural History Museum)

History Museum

Styrian Armoury

Hunting and Agriculture Museum Schloss Stainz

Schloss Trautenfels

For more information about the accessibility of the individual museums, see the relevant websites and www.steiermark.com/fuer-alle

Accessibility

Despite the differing construction features and specifications of our protected monument status, we strive to exceed the legally required Austrian regulations. Building accessibility enables all visitors to enter our museums independently and have a hassle-free and enjoyable experience. This process is facilitated by wheelchair accessible entrances which enable independent opening (push button/door opener), automatic and motorised doorways and touch-based guidance systems and pictograms. Detailed information on our website also simplifies planning of museum visits.

Usability

It is important to us that as many visitors as possible can ‘use’ our museums and enjoy a pleasant visit. Use of clear pictograms and high-contrast writing makes it easier for visitors to find their way around the buildings and exhibitions. In the lifts braille lettering, larger keypads positioned at a lower level and audible floor announcements are provided.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome in all of the buildings, park areas and exhibitions of the Universalmuseum Joanneum.

Hiring wheelchairs and transport wheelchairs

Wheel chairs are available to hire from the Kunsthaus Graz and Schloss Eggenberg. Transport wheelchairs can be provided free-of-charge to visitors at the Joanneum Quarter, Styrian Armoury and History Museum on presentation of official photo ID at the counter.

Educational mediation and groups

We offer tours and workshops for people with disabilities – advance notification required. In the case of groups from social organisations, we can provide access to our exhibitions at a special price.

Tours for registered groups: 1.50 €/person (excl. admission); admission and tour are free for carers.

Without a group: admission cost for adults with a disability: 6 €/person, tour: 2.50 €/person, admission and tour are free to carers.
