In the ten years that Domenico Fetti was active between the Duchy of Mantua and Venice, his sophisticated production, steeped in Christian and academic intellectual knowledge, underwent a real split that is now easier to identify with two different markets. The seriality of certain of his themes is justified precisely in this parallel multiplicity of commissions to which Fetti could only respond with speed, but with variety. This is not a diminutio, nor is it a mechanical activity: each original work was guaranteed by a monographic pictogram, by a hidden sign, by a concealed letter, almost as if it were an eclipsed imprint but visible to those who possessed, yesterday as today, the correct interpretative key. In contrast to the work in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, the David with the head of Goliath in Graz
is titled from the point of view of provenance, because already in Leopold Willelm's inventory in Vienna 1659 (No. 419, it was referred to as ‘von Fetti Original’), and the subject depicted is still an enigma to be solved today.

Über die Vortragende
Raffaella Morselli ist Professorin an der Universität La Sapienza in Rom und Mitglied der Accademia Raffaello di Urbino. Sie befasst sich mit der Geschichte des Sammelns, des Mäzenatentums und des Kunstmarktes im Italien des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts und ist Spezialistin für Guido Reni, Guercino, Rubens, Francesco Albani und Domenico Fetti. Sie war Kuratorin mehrerer Ausstellungen: La celeste galeria (Mantua 2002-2003), über die Sammlung von Kardinal Silvio Valenti Gonzaga (Mantua 2005), über Guido Reni (Rom 2022, Galleria Borghese), über Meisterwerke, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs gerettet wurden (Arte Liberata 1937-1947 Rom 2022-2023, Scuderie del Quirinale) über Rubens im Palazzo Te. Pittura, trasformazione e libertà (Mantua, 7. Oktober bis 7. Januar 2023-2024) und über Guercino (Bologna Pinacoteca Nazionale, November bis Februar 2023-2024). Sie erhielt verschiedene Forschungsstipendien an Institutionen wie dem Getty Center (Los Angeles 1994) und dem Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (Washington D.C. 2014) und ist Mitglied zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Komitees von Museen, Ausstellungen, internationalen Zeitschriften und Verlagsreihen.
