Fences and roofs

in the Austrian Open-Air Museum

Together with the gardens and cultural monuments such as wayside shrines or wayside crosses, the various fences and also roofs complete the picture of the settlement landscape from all over Austria. The roofs of a region were usually uniform and formed a closed, harmonious roof landscape. In principle, steep roofs tended to be found in areas with high precipitation, while flat roofs were sufficient in dry climates. Depending on the available material and intended use, a variety of forms of fencing also developed over the centuries, which still characterise regions and cultural landscapes today as landscape-defining elements.
