Artists in Residence

The Austrian Sculpture Park annually invites national and international artists or art students to join the debate around the concepts of sculpture and the park itself, developing new artworks for the collection.

Through mutual utilisation of the synergies created by this programme and the atelier programmes of the Land Steiermark, the artists benefit from residential studios, the profound library of the Institute for Art in Public Spaces and their curatorial expertise, which can be accessed in case of content related consensus.

Sculpture class of the Master School for Art and Design at the Ortwein School Graz

During the first encounter with the sculptural installation InThenOut, designed and executed by students of Tobias Rehberger at the Städelschule Frankfurt, it was noticed that the sculptures individual frames can be set into vibration by the application of physical force.

The students of the Master School for Sculpture at the Ortweinschule Graz, class 2XMKUB, set themselves the task of making this inherent feature visible. An impulse-giving force was found in the form and function of a jigsaw. Various possibilities for attaching it to the construction were investigated. In the end, the position was found which, similar to the bucket with cactus, is located on the top between two frames. The machine is built into an iron construction and wrapped in a cocoon-like manner with transparent tape to protect it from the weather.

An electrical impulse is briefly triggered at a timed interval, which - similar to a woodpecker - causes the adapted mechanics of the jigsaw to strike the metal of the installation.
