About the
Project

The international campaign "16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence" puts the issue centre stage and raises awareness of violence against women* in all its forms and with all its effects. As part of the #BevorEsPassiert campaign, Frauenservice Graz, in cooperation with Kunsthaus Graz, is drawing attention to violence against women* with a project for the BIX media façade and a memorial march.

Association Women's Service Graz.
An event organised by the umbrella association of Styrian Women's and Girls' Counseling Centers.

A project by: Sophie Gartner, Marie Hammer, Hannah Krusch-Batruel, Rebecca Scharler and Melina Seifert

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women* the Kunsthaus Graz and Frauenservice Graz are commemorating the 85 women* who were murdered by men from their living environment in Austria over the past three years with an intervention by young female artists from Graz on the BIX media facade.

During the 16 days against Gender-Based Violence (November 25th - December 10th, 2023), the date of death, age and place of death of the victims of all femicides of the last three years will be shown one by one on the facade - repeatedly interrupted by the woman symbol, which lights up briefly only to fade away immediately afterwards. The fact that the victims of these femicides can only be identified by these data is deliberately emphasized. Only in the rarest of cases are the names of the murdered women documented in the registers. How can commemoration take place when women disappear behind the numbers?

It was important for the artists' group that the project should not cause frustration, but rather strengthen the desire for change. By cooperating with the Frauenservice Graz and redesigning their flyers on the "10 Tips for Civil Courage", the artists emphasize the power we have as a society to effectively fight against patriarchal violence.
