Architect Colin Fournier described the Kunsthaus as a “friendly alien” – a biomorphic structure whose organic form and high-tech skin deliberately set it apart from its historic surroundings, while at the same time making it an integral part of the urban landscape.

Since 2003, the BIX Media Facade on the city-facing side of Kunsthaus Graz has transformed the building into a platform for artistic interventions – a medium of communication between art, architecture, and urban space.

Kunsthaus Graz regularly issues open calls, inviting regional, national, and international artists to develop innovative projects that engage with current social, ecological, or institutional issues.

The calls are open to contemporary artistic practices across disciplines and often include the opportunity to present the resulting work at Kunsthaus Graz, along with a production fee.

Artists in exile, as well as artists with migrant or diasporic backgrounds, have significantly shaped European cultural history, yet remain underrepresented in institutions and archives. According to Mathilde Provansal, only around 30% of works exhibited in European museums are by women artists and this proportion is even lower when gender is considered alongside migration or ethnicity.

BRIDGE addresses this gap through a two-year collaboration between City of Women (Ljubljana), Kunsthaus Graz, and AWARE (Paris). Bringing together research, artistic production, exhibitions, and publications, the project aims to make diverse voices visible and strengthen the presence of women and non-binary artists with experiences of exile, migration, or diaspora within the European art landscape.

Whether exhibition catalogue, artist’s edition, or theoretical exploration, our publications and editions are closely connected to the projects presented at Kunsthaus Graz. Many accompany current exhibitions and offer further insights into artistic practices and curatorial questions.
