20 Years Kunsthaus Graz

The opening evening will begin with speeches and a participatory choral performance by Franz Jochum, choral conductor at the Kunstuniversität Graz. We draw conclusions from past experiences about what lies ahead. Over the past 20 years, the Kunsthaus Graz has been shaped not least by the artists who have helped to shape its programme. We asked 20 of them for their utopias for the future as the basis for a piece of music - sung by a choir of singers, staff and visitors. Every voice is welcome.

The computer measures spaces, cuts up, isolates and alienates sounds, creating a deterministic composition in real time.The music fills the space, and the space fills the music.

The sound material is an impulse that is spatially re-recorded and forms both the score and the sound material as an impulse response, obtained through recurring resampling. The result is a sound space that plays the concert space.
A cello intervenes with phrases, enriching the sound space until it is overruled by it and the computer sounds become static musical space.A special Ambisonics version for IKOsaeder speaker was written for Space01 of the Kunsthaus Graz.

We talk about visionary concepts for (museum) buildings, the relationship between building and institution and their rootedness in space and time.

Colin Fournier (architect of the Kunsthaus Graz, together with Peter Cook), Peter Pakesch (founding director Kunsthaus Graz), Pieternel Vermoortel (senior curator Steirischer Herbst), and chief curator Katrin Bucher Trantow discuss visionary concepts, a re-viewing of the relationship between building and institution and its rootedness in space and time. We discuss ongoing issues of relation and reaction through rich sediments from the past. Fournier's current visionary project, Circadian House, serves as both reflection and inspiration, taking us on a projective journey towards a living building for the future to come.

Protocols for Utopia: Being One

In the hours between day and night, when the sun starts to set, Being One follows traces of Jean Luc Nancy, Édouard Glissant and Donna J. Haraway, where forming a peaceful community can succeed through a poetic understanding of being in common. In the architecturally continuous space without beginning or end, we invite you to activate your senses and stroll, be together and listen. Together with the well-known writer and poet Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin (novelist and short story writer in Sudan and Stadtschreiber in Graz 2023) we have invited writers, musicians and thinkers to a reading, singing and listening session to create a continuum of thoughts, sounds and acoustic images with them.

Together we want to experience a non-linear evening in which concepts of non-linearity and mondiality – as postulated by Édouard Glissant – and of multilingualism become physically tangible.

The durational performance Being One is part of Protocols for Utopia, the opening chapter of the exhibition Sol LeWitt's Wall. Performed. Re-Imagine the Future, in which Sol LeWitt's monumental 2004 work Wall is re-activated and re-read over a period of nine months. Sol LeWitt famously hands out a concept in which the concise idea is the main artistic invention while the production of the works becomes a collective endeavour in which the rules are followed conscientiously. The performance program of Protocols for Utopia challenges concepts of space and time.

The Dreams We Call Our Own is a new performance devised by the artist Jasmina Cibic and commissioned by Kunsthaus Graz and steirischer
herbst ’23. Known for her performative installations addressing the staging of ideology, Cibic´s new site specific performance builds on the artist’s research on the exchanges between the art workers of the Non-Aligned Countries held in Titograd, former Yugoslavia between 21st and 25th October 1985.

Cibic has meticulously combed through the archive of these meetings and debates and from it drew a propositional text that takes form of a political address. Combining sentences from diverse contributions found in the archive, Cibic collected instruction-like phrases that suggest how to achieve self-determination of an oppressed identity.

Cibic conceived the performance The Dreams We Call Our Own as a deconstruction of the patriarchal form of the medium of political address itself and breaks the text down into a new narrative set into music by the composer and artist Barbara Kinga Majewska. The work is performed by eight female singers distributed on suspended structures throughout Kunsthaus Graz.

Jasmina Cibic is a London based artist who works in film, performance, and installation. She represented Slovenia at the 55th Venice Biennial with her project “For Our Economy and Culture”. Her recent exhibitions include solo shows at: Museum der Moderne Salzburg, The Highline New York, macLyon, Museum Sztuki Łódź, Museum of Contemporary Art Ljubljana, CCA Glasgow, Phi Foundation Montreal, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art Gateshead, Ludwig Museum Budapest, Kunstmuseen Krefeld along with group exhibitions at MAXXI Rome, steirischer herbst '19, MOMA NY, Marta Herford and Guangdong Museum of Art China. Cibic’s films have been screened at the Barbican London, Whitechapel Gallery, CCA Montreal, Pula Film Festival, HKW Berlin, Louvre, Les Rencontres Internationales Paris, Aesthetica, Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Dokfest Kassel and Copenhagen International Documentary Festival. Cibic was the winner of the MAC International Ulster Bank and Charlottenborg Fonden awards (2016), the B3 Biennial of the Moving Image Award (2020) and the Film London Jarman Award (2021).

Barbara Kinga Majewska is a classically trained musician specializing in contemporary vocal music, composer and author of sound installations. A graduate of Detmold Academy of Music, Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. She is the author of music for sound installations (Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra) and performances (Jeu de Massacre at Teatr Studio, Silenzio at Nowy Teatr). Her works have been shown at Galerie Barbara Thumm Berlin (New Viewings #36), Galeria Wschód (solo exhibition Little Solfège), House of Contemporary Culture Marres and Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź (trio Codex Subpartum with Konrad Smoleński and Michał Libera). She has performed at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, National Museum in Warsaw, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Ujazdowski Castle Center for Contemporary Art, Polin Museum, National Opera, and Polish Radio Studios. He is a regular guest at such festivals as Donaueschinger Musiktage, Warsaw Autumn, Unsound, Sacrum Profanum, Malta Festival.

The Dreams We Call Our Own is part of the research project and film work Beacons, commissioned by IMMA, Irish Museum of Modern Art, for the exhibition Self Determination: A Global Perspective.
