Promotion Prize of the Province of Styria for Contemporary Fine Arts 2013

Exhibition Opening

07.11.2013 19:00

Duration: Nov 8, 2013 - Feb 9, 2014

The competition for the Styrian art prize is addressed to those artists who have some connection with Styria. As such, it is a local project. However, most of the artists taking part in the competition have fairly distant links with the province and have for some time now been active outside of Styria, co-creating the artistic scenes of Vienna, Berlin, London or Brussels. For this reason, the event may also be seen as supralocal. Its international dimension is further enhanced by the fact that for many years the final exhibitions have been organised by foreign curators, who have also been responsible for selecting the competition winners.

This dual nature engages the competition in an intriguing relationship with the globalised reality of the contemporary artworld. On the one hand, the competition—by emphasising its local artistic context—may be perceived as an action directed against the homogenising power of the global market forces. On the other hand, it may be seen as an attempt to become part of another form of globalisation—a form that is based on the coexistence of different localisms related one to another, and seen through the prism of each other, beyond the hierarchizing system rooted in the centre-periphery opposition. In this context, we should perhaps acknowledge that the greatest value of this project is the space it creates, where the local art scene can be confronted with other localisms: those brought in by ‘artists-emigrants’ and that contributed by the ‘curator-immigrant’.
