About the call

Kunsthaus Graz once again invites submissions for the open call of the Environmental Art Prize. The museum is seeking an artistic position engaging with themes of environment, sustainability, and resistant resilience. The selected project will receive a production fee of €3,000 as well as the opportunity to realise an exhibition intervention at Kunsthaus Graz in October 2026.

As a Green Museum, Kunsthaus Graz has promoted sustainable practices in both its operations and exhibition-making since receiving the Austrian Ecolabel certification in 2022. With the second edition of the Environmental Art Prize, Kunsthaus Graz aims once again to highlight artistic projects that critically, creatively, and forward-lookingly address issues of resource consumption, production methods, and ecological responsibility.

The Environmental Art Prize is supported by SERVUS ABFALL, a joint company of Holding Graz and Saubermacher. It is awarded in cooperation with Markt der Zukunft as a complement to the Environmental Prize of the City of Graz. The award ceremony will take place on 4 November 2026 as part of the city’s Environmental Prize event at Space04, Kunsthaus Graz.

Art as a Resistant Practice

For a culture of respect — towards the environment and ourselves: under this guiding principle, and inspired by the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals, this year’s call is dedicated to the theme “Resist!”. The starting point is the current exhibition 30% Dandelion and the concept of “(R)esistere” coined by artist Aldo Giannotti — understood as a resistant, adaptive, and sustainable way of engaging with the world.

The Environmental Art Prize 2026 seeks works that propose alternatives to excess, waste, and resource-intensive production. The focus lies on creative, speculative, or practical approaches that establish sustainable forms of production over time or through practical or metaphorical resistance to dominant production systems. Responsible engagement with the environment and resources should form the core of the work. Local projects that experiment with new modes of production and propose viable alternatives to extractive systems are especially welcome.

The selected project will be presented at Kunsthaus Graz from early October to early November 2026 and will be freely accessible to visitors as part of the exhibition programme.

The jury consists of Katia Huemer and Katrin Bucher Trantow (Kunsthaus Graz), as well as Judith Schwentner (Vice Mayor of the City of Graz).

The Environmental Art Award is supported by the KunsthausCommunity.
