Michael Gülzow. The Gate to Unreality

What if we could seamlessly move back and forth between news, science fiction and fake worlds? Perhaps even without noticing.

In Michael Gülzow's video installation, as well as in his trailer for the Diagonale '26, we travel alongside his protagonists not only through time, but also through realities. The filmmaker examines the medial construction of truth in times before and after the fascinatingly frightening possibilities of AI and blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction through the artful montage of found footage and his own material. However, the obvious and humorous editing does not create an illusion, but rather reveals the mechanisms of manipulation and deconstructs post-factual narratives.

In the space between these realities, Michael Gülzow and curator Martin Grabner discuss the relation between reality and fiction and how contemporary image production, from science fiction to AI, shapes our view of the world.
