View of the Kunsthaus Graz at night.

In addition to the biomorphic shape of the Kunsthaus, it is above all the blue panels of the facade that give the 'Friendly Alien' its distinctive appearance. At night, the building communicates with the city through the luminous BIX media facade.

Key Facts about the Facade

Panels

Acrylic glass panels: The façade consists of a total of 1,288 blue-tinted, semi-transparent acrylic glass panels, 1,100 of which are on the exterior and 188 inside the building. Each panel is uniquely shaped.

Nozzles

The “eyes” or “spikes” of the Friendly Alien are called nozzles and appear as protrusions. Of the total 16 nozzles, 15 face north, while one is directed toward the clock tower (Uhrturm).

Gutter

Equatorial gutter: Rainwater flows down the façade between the acrylic glass panels and is collected in the equatorial gutter. From there, the water is channeled into an underground cistern. In case of emergency, this cistern supplies the external sprinkler system, which cools the façade.

BIX Media Facade

The BIX Media Facade (BIX = Big Pixel) was developed by the Berlin-based architecture studio realities:united and consists of 926 circular fluorescent lamps. Each lamp can be controlled individually and switched on or off up to 24 times per second. Through its changing displays — often created by artists — it serves as an important medium of communication and interaction with the city. The façade is powered by a photovoltaic system, meaning that the sun determines the duration of its illumination.
