In 2014, students from the Tobias Rehberger class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main realized the work In Then Out as artists in residence. Based on the need for a place to live, they created an object that is located somewhere between sculpture and architecture. The foil material wrapped around rectangular frame structures up to 5 m high as walls was removed at the end of the year so that other artists could be invited to adapt the basic structure again and again.
Supervised by Anke Strittmatter and Erika Thümmel, the fourteen students were inspired by the initial approach of the sculpture's creators by making reference to the exact moment when the Rehberger students at the Städelschule developed the idea for the sculpture while camping in the sculpture park. With "14", the 2016 version, the creation process is to be made visible.
14 blue ropes, representing the fourteen students involved in this year's project, will be added to the sculpture's framework. With this intervention, they insert themselves into the newly created sculpture while taking up what has already happened. The original scaffolding remains in place - they connect to it and span the arc from then to now.
