Signal mortars were used as way of warning people about the prospect of enemy invasion.
Image Credits
Two shots meant that enemy troops intended to invade the country. Three shots indicated that the enemy was already on its way. Four shots and a lit pile of wood meant that the enemy was already on local terrain. The warning was visible and audible from a distance, and passed on from one signal station to another.
