Der Wunsch der Avantgarde nach einer Überführung der Kunst ins Leben bis hin zur Aufhebung von Kunst durch die Realität bedeutet im Wiener Aktionismus nicht nur ein Ersetzen klassischer künstlerischer Parameter durch das reale Objekt und das unmittelbare Agieren des Künstlers vor Publikum. Ausgehend von der Idee einer expandierenden Malerei löst das reale Objekt zunächst die Farbe, das Werkzeug und die Leinwand ab. Bei Brus bedeutet die Selbstbemalung in der Folge ein Ersetzen der Leinwand durch die Haut.
