Interfaces and overall project: Daniel Ranegger
The project enables every passer-by to communicate their own personal message on a medium that is not normally accessible to them. Whether it is a personal statement, a message, or simply the opportunity to be responsible for the content of the BIX facade is up to each individual.
Fourth Dimension enables to display a text message (sent via an ordinary mobile phone number) directly on the BIX façade of the Kunsthaus Graz. The text of the SMS is displayed as a scrolling message, with the last word dissolving into Conway's Game of Life algorithm. The project is made up of four independent individual projects, for which interfaces were created to enable collaboration.
First Dimension:
The SMS is received via a standard mobile phone that is connected to a computer. This happens automatically; so there is no need to confirm incoming messages.
Second Dimension:
The message is passed through a filter that recognizes offensive words and replaces them with placeholders. This function uses both German and English lists and could also be extended if necessary.
Third Dimension:
The message is "scanned" and the text is converted into pixels which correspond to the resolution of the BIX facade. The matrix created in this way is sent to the BIX facade and displayed there.
Fourth Dimension:
When the end of the message is reached, the individual pixels of the last letters are converted to the starting point for the Game of Life algorithm according to Conway and the first development cycles are performed.
The number to which SMS can be sent is also shown on the BIX facade if there are no messages to be displayed for a longer period of time.
