Eva Schlegel

Eva Schlegel uses a variety of media for her spatial investigations. Whilst in the Space01 exhibition space a long, narrow strip of LED panels hugs the S-curve of the Kunsthaus Graz Bubble, the video running across it – in an adapted form – also glows across the city from the building’s BIX façade after dark, displaying a constantly shifting interweaving of forms. As abstract as the visual sequences may appear, they are rooted in a concrete scientific concept known as the Turing mechanism. The British mathematician Alan Turing described the spontaneous emergence of patterns in reaction-diffusion systems – a model still used today to explain biological pattern formation, such as the distinctive markings of zebras, giraffes and leopards.  Since the distribution of these patterns is governed by chance, each individual develops a unique set of markings. In Dance of Chance, Eva Schlegel translates this principle into a visual reflection on change and order.
