Radovan Zogović was a prominent Montenegrin poet and revolutionary whose early poetry was very socially engaged. The author himself characterized his work as i. a .a ‘lyrical document of the suffering of the Albanian population in the former Yugoslavia’. By intertwining poetry with artistic practice, Tomić places the revolutionary legacy of the partisan resistance at the center of a critical, contemporary reflection. .
Because in that very sentence, the entire poem echoes as the voice of those who sacrificed everything, now asking, retrospectively: did we know how to love? Not out of nostalgia, but from a place of ethical and political unease.
Zogović’s question – ‘Did we love, we?’ – is of course, not only about love.
It is a question about the boundary between a life devoted to struggle, the love we feel, and the potential for feeling.
