About the exhibition
What is a garden, a habitat, a sphere, a cave? In a direct dialogue with the Kunsthaus Graz, the important German artist and essayistic documentary film-maker Hito Steyerl is planning an installation in Space01’s dark dome that multiply interlocks on both digital and analogue levels. In the maelstrom of pulsating images, digital rhythms and sounds, Steyerl lets the public speculation on the relations between language and aesthetic form, between technological structure and power-preserving systems.
Hito Steyerl’s works are trenchant analyses of our highly technological society. As a profound expert on digital space and artificial intelligence, the artist, participant at Dokumenta and many times at the Biennale, develops many-layered, intertwined installations, which, in multiple, partially interactive narratives, identify the image as a location of perceiving the world. The artist thereby follows the ‘reality that is expanded by technology’, engaging both critically and subversively with global flows in finance and goods, working relations and power structures. Playing with the manipulative power of the visual, she thereby deals out institutional critique that extends far beyond the museum.
