Nucleotides, 2025

Water is the element that Emilija Škarnulytė continuously explores, diving into it – both physically and exploratory. In her immersive installations, the artist delves deep into our planet and cosmos, exploring visible and invisible infrastructures, geological and mythological time periods as well as hybrid ecosystems.

Nucleotides are the basic building blocks of DNA and RNA. They serve all living organisms to store and replicate genetic information and control metabolic processes. In her edition, Emilija Škarnulytė illustrates microscopically enlarged nucleotides from algae. Many marine organisms often possess unique variants or unusual metabolic pathways that show how cells function under extreme conditions. Based on the visual aesthetics of scientific representations, the artist points out how research uses and appropriates these biochemical ‘superpowers’ – specifically nucleotides – for human applications such as cosmetics and medicine
