About the exhibition

In 1959, a prize for contemporary art was created in Styria: the so-called ‘Joanneum Art Prize’ was awarded to the major representatives of Styrian modernism until 1967. In 1968, this award was renamed the ‘Art Prize of the Province of Styria’, and from 1983 onwards the ‘Prize for the Promotion of Contemporary Visual Art’ with an age limit set for younger artists; from 1999, the age limit for the ‘Promotion Prize’ was lifted – since then, all artists have been able to take part, provided they were born in Styria or have their main place of residence here. A competition is organised whereby an art expert with international experience initially curates an exhibition from all the works submitted. In a further stage of the competition, the prizes and stipends are awarded from the positions represented in the exhibition.
