How does history come about? What really happened where and when, and how can it be imagined? What can be visualised? How do pictures arise of periods of history we have not experienced? Who tells the stories and about whom and what? While these may seem banal questions to ask, they form the basis for the generation of historical knowledge.

Martin Walde, installation artist, sculptor and illustrator, explores the question of historicity in this exhibition. One place – this time a castle in Styria – provides the venue for speculations and for the construction of history. Processes, people and a location are the central elements in the reconstruction and interpretation of possible facts. Fiction, dystopia and utopia are compressed here into one intermediate stage. The graphic novel – Walde will collaborate with a comic illustrator on this project – serves as the formal basis for an alternative to the writing of history.

Facts from Fiction - Fiction from Facts combines Martin Walde’s fundamental engagement with the depiction of time with a new, highly comprehensive project, which once again engages with forms of processuality and their formation into an image.
