About the exhibition
Katharina Sabernig is a doctor and anthropologist who has worked with anatomical illustrations, visualised medicine and Tibetan medical terminology. Inspired by the diversity of anatomical representations and the ethical issues associated with this art, she began knitting anatomical objects in 2015. In her current project, she depicts the topography of internal organs and their vascular supply, taking the size of an adult person as a starting point.
Katharina Sabernig studied ethnomedicine and medicine in Vienna, completing her doctorate on ‘Visualised Medicine’, in which she deciphered the contents of murals in the medical faculty of the Tibetan monastery of Labrang. The anatomical terms she identified led to her second major project dedicated to Tibetan and Asian history of anatomical depiction, which ultimately inspired her work on ‘knitted anatomy’. The purpose of her work is to visualise medical content and thereby promote understanding of the current situation. It is hoped that this form of presentation will help reduce emotions such as fear, rejection or aggression and instead find an approach to the topic that is more sensory.
