About the project
For youngsters, external crises – such as the Corona crisis at the moment – and the accompanying measures are particularly sensitive. Social contacts and free spaces are central, important, stabilising factors for the development of young people psychologically. If such factors fall away, adolescents are deprived of important life-forming possibilities to experiment and unfold. Empty spaces arise, which can be filled in the most varied ways. Exactly this subject is taken up by Project NEU! (NEW!) from the Institute of Art in Public Space Styria and the Offene Jugendarbeit (Open Youth Work). The goal is the creation of interventions in the spirit of renewal from a young person’s perspective. The artists’ collective, Anna Jermolaewa, Total Refusal and Florian Berger, are invited to Knittelfeld, Kindberg and Passail respectively. There they investigate, jointly with local youths, the changes in their lives and work out something NEW! Together, artistic interventions for public space in the medium term are developed in each of the municipalities concerned. The aim is to bring young people’s issues out into the open, clear and noticeable for the wider public.
