UNESCO World Heritage

We are very proud that, at the 34th session of the World Heritage Committee in Brasília, the existing World Heritage site "Graz – Historic Centre" was extended to include Schloss Eggenberg.

Princely Residence

Eggenberg Palace is a unique synthesis of the arts dating back to the early Baroque period where architecture and design combine to create a complex symbolist representation of the universe, the cosmos of an educated statesman. The residence of Imperial Governor Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg is political architecture established to express the powerful legitimation of the rule of a family.

State Rooms

The Bel Étage of Eggenberg Palace has remained almost unchanged since the 18th century. Furnished with original 17th and 18th century designs, furniture, tapestries and decorations, the circle of 24 state rooms is among the most significant ensembles in Austria. It is extremely rare to find fittings of comparable artistic quality that have been maintained in such perfect condition and in their original state as in Eggenberg Palace. The core of this concept is the splendid Planetary Room.

Gardens

Since their establishment in the early 17th century, the gardens at Eggenberg have experienced many changes, always reflecting the prevailing taste and ideals of the day. Only few traces are left of the formal Baroque garden of the princes of Eggenberg, which surrounded the palace with its generous boxwood “parterres de broderie” and tall clipped hedge walls.

Now Eggenberg palace is located in a huge landscaped garden dating back to the Romantic period, which is regarded among the most precious garden monuments in Austria.
