About the
Exhibition

Over the past few years, Maria Legat has made a name for herself as an outstanding artist of her generation. As a painter, she draws with charcoal on raw linen, which is not stretched on a stretcher frame but nailed flat to the wall, and in a second step, she glazes her forms with colors she mixes herself. Legat's paintings are always political, but they are not reactions to current affairs; they are theoretically grounded, but they are not illustrations of contemporary theoretical thinkers; they are personal, but they are not expressions of individual mythologies. Legat draws and paints parables about the state of the world and is able to visualize that which is indeterminate, half-guessed and half-known, which opens up on the horizon of social developments, in an original, metaphorical visual language. The exhibition at the BRUSEUM is the artist's first solo museum exhibition and also the first solo exhibition by a female artist at the Museum for Günter Brus.
