The exhibition Staying Within the Framework of the Impossible puts a renewed focus on the BRUSEUM’s collection, while also exploring the socio-political conditions in which Günter Brus’s work was created, exhibited and collected by institutions such as the Neue Galerie Graz. The precarious circumstances in which Brus lived and worked are reflected both in the artistic material and in the spaces that were available to him, whether this was for staging his actions or exhibiting his works. Through its display, the exhibition at the BRUSEUM seeks to illustrate these precarious and complex conditions. At the same time, it highlights the responsibility and effort required for a museum to collect, preserve, research and exhibit works in the face of the budgetary uncertainties of today. The show traces Brus’s oeuvre over the decades, although the works are not arranged chronologically to follow well-known lines of development; instead, they are grouped according to motif and theme, so revealing his ongoing engagement with particular artistic, existential and socio-political questions.
