About the
Exhibition

The exhibition presents the works of Styrian participants in the various studio programmes, as well as foreign scholarships bestowed by the Cultural Department of the Regional Government of Styria in 2021/22.

The whole province as a space for art. Styria as a venue of the avantgarde. A region in which the density of artists is higher than in many places. All these notions and clichés are evoked at the sight of this exhibition. This was not curated in the classical sense; rather, the contributions arose through a jury’s decision, awarded in the form of travel and studio stipends and then condensed here into an exhibition. The show, expanded this year, shows artistic potentialities, heterogeneous positions and chance juxtapositions. In terms of content, surprising parallels result. The general feeling of unease and the threat in the face of dramatic global developments finds expression in many of the works on show. Questions of one’s own identity, speculation concerning a complex perception of reality, social dynamics, as well as the environment and its rapidly changing processes are the subject of debate here – art as a seismographic and prognostic force is a key element in an engaged society.
