The duo guts’n’faders (Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka, cb and Peter Venus, electronics) combines the archaic sound of the large string instrument with electronic music. This concert programme explores the interplay between humans and the environment through music, with environmental sounds entering into dialogue with instruments and interactive artificial intelligence becoming part of the musical performance. The programme features the world premiere of a new piece from Elisabeth Schimana's #virus series.
Programme:
Elisabeth Schimana (AT) - #virus1.8 for double bass and live electronics (world premiere)
Peter Venus (DE) - I can hear the ice go (2021)
Karen Power (IE) - Human Nature no. 1 & 3 (2018)
Artemi Maria Gioti (GR) - symbiosis (2016)
Consisting of Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka (double bass) and Peter Venus (electronics), the duo has been cultivating music for double bass and electronics since 2013. The supposed contrasts between the two instruments ('faders' as a synonym for electronic sound interfaces and 'guts' in the sense of gut strings) dissolve in their joint approach to space and sound modification. Guts'n'faders often collaborate with composers and installation artists on new works. The duo has performed at Musikprotokoll Graz, Q-O2 Brussels, IGNM Austria, DEGEM Hamburg and the International Radio Art Festival Art's Birthday, as well as collaborating with other artists on various projects.
Peter Venus, hailing from Dresden, is a sound and video engineer and sound director at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He studied sound engineering at Graz University of Technology and experimental sound and media practice at UCC Cork. As an immersive media design specialist, he works with the Salzburg Festival, among others, supervising opera productions worldwide, including at the Baden-Baden State Opera and the Beijing Opera.
Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka is a double bass player, sound artist and musicologist. Alongside many years of orchestral work, she specialises in new music and is a founding member of the Graz-based Ensemble Schallfeld.
