Evamaria Schaller
"Don't turn around, don't turn around..."
11.02.-19.03.2017
About the exhibition
Performance and media artist Evamaria Schaller absolved in 2016 a two-months scholarship in Istanbul. At that time Turkey showed first signs of an authoritarian regime due to waves of arrest and restrictive laws. Schallers’s performances and interventions are characterised by inscribing her own body in the specific local spaces.
In Istanbul she did minimal performances in public space that has been male dominated since old times. The imperative Don’t-turn-around indicates a condition of observation and surveillance, of despotism, but is, at the same time, a suggestion to carry on – as if everything were okay, as if one would not need to be afraid.
About the studio
The studio of the Neue Galerie served from the 1990s to 2010 as a platform for young Austrian artists who were not yet fully established in the art business after graduation, finding themselves at the outset of their career.
From 2017 this essential mechanism for the promotion and documentation of young art will be reintroduced in the Joanneum Quarter.
