About the exhibition
Axl Leskoschek (Graz 1889–1976 Vienna) was one of the most important representatives of the Austrian avant-garde during the interwar period. As a left-wing activist, he was persecuted from 1934 and emigrated to Switzerland in 1938 and then to Brazil in 1940. Leskoschek spent very successful years in exile. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro and made numerous illustrations for books, especially for Portuguese Dostoyevsky editions. He returned to Austria in 1948, but was denied the recognition he had in Brazil.
