Artists in Residence

In 1993, the Neue Galerie Graz introduced an Artist in Residence program continuing the International Weeks of Painting, which were concentrated on artists from the trigon countries (1966–1992). It is intended to provide artists an adequate working environment, while at the same time linking the Graz art scene and the Neue Galerie to the international art world. The work created by the artists during their stays (on average 6 weeks) is not necessarily intended to be exhibited. lnstead the idea is to give the artists the possibility to carry out projects and initiatives which would otherwise be difficult to realize. The selection and working criteria are experimentation, research and innovation.

The Neue Galerie‘s Artist in Residence program provides a sort of laboratory setting. Examples of today‘s avant-garde art, with all its media and forms of expression, are to be shown in the process of production. Insights into, and reports on, the work of the artists are to be given periodically.
