The exhibition *After the War* is dedicated to a chapter of Austrian-Styrian contemporary history that is highly relevant in light of current violent conflicts and problems around the world: wars come to an end. And whether one looks at Ukraine, … what is needed is help for the people.
After the end of World War II, Styria was severely scarred by bombed-out cities and destroyed infrastructure. The economy was in ruins. In addition, as of mid-1946, more than 80,000 non-Austrians were still in the country as war refugees, more than 17,000 of whom were housed in mass accommodations.
Without sufficient international aid, the region faced the threat of widespread collapse and famine. By adopting a broad understanding of humanitarian aid, this exhibition aims to raise questions that go beyond an analysis of the motives and achievements of the participating NGOs, addressing the connections between government and nongovernmental programs as well as the relationship between occupation policies and humanitarian engagement.
