In 1567, Italian medallist Antonio Abondio created a pendant medallion for Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria. The portrait on the obverse shows Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria looking to the right, with short curly hair and a narrow ruff, his upper body clad in ceremonial armour and girded with a field belt. The reverse features the archduke's motto, ‘Fortune favours the bold,’ and the goddess of fortune, Fortuna.
She is depicted as a delicate, winged female figure, turned slightly to the right, standing on a winged globe in the turbulent sea. In her right hand she holds a palm branch, while in her raised left hand she carries a banner billowing in the wind. In the background, the outlines of buildings and towers of a city can be seen by the sea. The medal is surrounded by a decorative frame to which a hanging pearl is attached.
