Surveillance

Michael Wallinger's work fprs.19 is an algorithmically generated video. It shows mutating patterns of ‘erroneous’ interpretations by artificial neural networks. These result from training an autoencoder with a data set of ‘erroneous’ interpretations by a facial recognition system. Data sets from encrypted instant messenger groups (such as WhatsApp) were obtained for this purpose. This application of automated facial recognition systems recently attracted international attention in connection with the Hong Kong protest movement. Detailed identity profiles of alleged opponents were published and continuously updated, turning every private smartphone into a mobile surveillance camera.
