About the
Project

In his work, Christoph Weber questions materials, their use and properties in order to reformulate and reshape them. The background lies in the old gravel and sand extraction and rafting from the Feistritz.

Christoph Weber

Untitled (Gravel Barge)

Christoph Weber’s sculpture refers to the extraction of gravel and sand from the Feistritz River that once took place as a sideline. Flat boats in the shape of a barge, specially developed for the transport of materials, were filled to the brim with sediments and plied the Feistritz. Based on old photos, the artist built a historical replica of a wooden boat with the involvement of the regional concrete factories and bfi Fürstenfeld and used it upstream to extract gravel and sand together with the young people. The collected natural materials served as basic substances for the production of concrete, which was poured into the barge in the next step. After the material dried out and hardened, this concrete barge is now representative of the historical resource extraction on the Feistritz. A work developed as part of the project Wasser Biennale (Water Biennial) in cooperation with the Institute for Art in Public Space Styria.[SL1]
