About the
Event

Opening of the project „Weaving Layers: "Knowing where to begin" by Gina van der Ploeg in Weiz in the context of „OPEN FIELDS – Art and Agriculture“.

OPEN FIELDS

Reflections on the sensitive and diverse interaction between humans and nature have existed since prehistory in the form of art. The OPEN FIELDS project focuses on essential aspects at the local level, namely those of agriculture in direct contact with art. This meeting of two apparent opposites is to be given space and time in a respectful setting on equal terms and in critical examination.

Weaving Layers: Knowing where to begin

Through the exchange and exploration of new knowledge, the sculptor, textile artist and farmer Gina van der Ploeg from Cape Town, South Africa experienced the basic processes of multifaceted and small-scale farming with spelt and buckwheat cultivation, nut groves and other rare crops such as fennel, poppy, flax, as well as honey or damask roses while living closely together, cooking and eating with the Breininger family from Weiz. She created a multi-layered, open result that took agricultural as well as intellectual work into consideration and related them to each other. This yielded fabrics made from found natural materials, photographs, architecture, conversations and an immersive cinematic installation experience intensively perceived with all the senses.
