The first part of this year's NonStopScheiner film programme focuses on the state of emergency that changed Austria exactly one year ago. In addition to numerous challenges, the first lockdown provided a wealth of film material from which the so-called CORONA_Rolle was created: a unique, unrepeatable historical document consisting of over 1,500 private mobile phone videos uploaded by people from all over Austria following a public appeal by the initiators of the #Echtzeitexperiment (real-time experiment) at the beginning of July 2020.
Based on a concept by director Elisabeth Scharang, these videos were edited into a film by artists Lisa Truttmann and Sebastian Brauneis according to the date they were recorded. They tell the story of the state of emergency during the first lockdown in Austria without commentary: empty squares and cleared-out supermarkets, falling trees and somewhat different ideas for keeping busy. The film is a kaleidoscope of moods, a ‘real-time experiment’ that is both humorous and oppressive.
