About the
Project

At the invitation of Günther Pedrotti the artist Alfredo Barsuglia built an island on the river Feistritz, which he named after the most common first name of the region, Maria. Barsuglia, like the director of an art and culture festival, appointed six curators to create art, performances and music for and on the island during the summer months of 2018. A project for the 6th Water Biennale YAHOOS-GARDEN in Fürstenfeld 2018 and in cooperation with the Institute for Art in Public Space Styria.

Island Maria

Named after the two most common first names in the region — Maria and Franz — the new island and the canal on the Feistritz River arose through excavations. Repeatedly playing the leading role at the “Wasser Biennale” (“Water Biennial”) festival in Fürstenfeld, the Feistritz provided the prerequisite for creating a new location for artistic projects outside the framework of traditional institutions through a bend. Connected to the “mainland” without a bridge, the site is both newly created and an appropriation of something that already exists. It is dedicated to culture and is used as part of the recurring festival.

Entrusted to the care of the city of Fürstenfeld, “Maria Island” could become a meeting point for art festival audiences, just as the island is already serving the population as a gathering spot for different purposes.
