Graphic prints replicate art’s major themes in small format with history, portrait and landscape paintings. In the large landscape depictions man is only a secondary consideration: a minor accessory known as staffage. In genre painting, his simple life takes centre stage. Whether in foul drinking holes or at a cheerful village festival, whether as a knife grinder or itinerant musician, as a fisherman or toiling peasant – all ordinary things are now worthy of widespread pictorial distribution.
