Styrian bryophyte mapping event around Leoben from 29.07.-02.08.2026
This year's Styrian moss mapping meeting will take place in the Leoben area. The meeting is aimed at experienced moss experts as well as beginners and anyone else who is interested. The excursions will be carried out in private cars (carpooling), and a minibus will also be available. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, mapping excursions in small independent groups are on the agenda. Each group maps one quadrant (approx. 25 km²) per day. The evenings are spent identifying the day's findings. A small number of light microscopes and stereo magnifiers are available. On Sunday, there will be a joint final excursion within walking distance of Mitterdorf im Mürztal (until around 12 noon) for participants who do not have to leave early.
The focus of the study area is north of Leoben and covers parts of the Mürztal Alps and the Eisenerzer Alps. The highest peaks are, for example, the Hohe Zölz (1,897 m) and the Lochturm (2,081 m). The valleys around Leoben, the Murtal, and the Trofaiach Basin are also included. The geology in the area is very diverse and includes limestone, phyllite, and gneiss.
We kindly request that you register by April 30, 2026, at naturkunde@museum-joanneum.at, providing as accurate information as possible regarding your room choice, arrival and departure times. Each participant is responsible for their own expenses. Students have the option of receiving a travel allowance (max. 70%). Accommodation, dining room, and work facilities are available at Gasthof Zum Greif (Der Greif | Ihr Hotel in Leoben). Accommodation in a double room including half board costs € 120 per night, double room including half board for single use € 95 per night. There is also the option of a 4-bed room or a vacation apartment including half board from € 175 per night. The rooms have been pre-booked, but you can also arrange your own accommodation.
Confirmation of participation will be sent by the end of May at the latest. Please note that registered participants may be charged a cancellation fee if they do not use their accommodation. Arrival is by Wednesday evening. Leoben is easily accessible by train. Carpooling can be arranged from Graz.
