Experience science and technology and plunge into Augmented Reality

On October 19th and 20th, a new Science Center will be opened in Graz’s Joanneum Quarter on space covering 1,200 m². After a three-year planning phase, the CoSA presents the themes of technology and sciences in an extraordinary way. In 12 specially designed rooms and with the aid of many interactive, hands-on stations and an Augmented Reality area, visitors immerse themselves into fascinating worlds.

The idea of the CoSA is to design the transference of knowledge in a way that is accessible, interactive and entertaining. The emphasis is always on taking part and becoming active. In the new Science Center, the aim is to enthuse adults, and above all young persons (so-called pre-teens and teenagers), for engagement with technology and science in a playful way, and for them to gain new insights.

Areas of Knowledge and Themes

The visitors can easily browse through the ‘Cabinet of Knowledge’ (CoSA_Experimentarium); in the CoSA_MedLab, they dip into the world of medical research. In the area of CoSA_Technology, visitors can slip into the role of developers, and design a fantastical means of transportation. In the CoSA_Sustainability room, youths join in a game based around the subject of sustainability. In the CoSA_Workshop, visitors solve various scientific and technical tasks. The area of CoSA_DIY (Do-It-Yourself) enables youngsters to realise their own ideas. Thus, the aim is to enthuse young people for crafts, technology and science.

The CoSA_Community invites visitors not only to hang out, network, brainstorm or chill, it also makes the link to scientific institutions, companies and universities. Guests present their ideas here, pupils write their pre-university essays etc. In the ‘Space & Deep Ocean’ (CoSA_Visions), one can experience a passive journey into the unknown – high up into outer space, and deep down into the oceans – advance into unknown worlds, unleashing dreams and visions. A special exhibition area (CoSA_Plus) shows examples of realised projects and results from science, research and technology. In the CoSA_Show, staff specially trained in acting will put on a spectacular show that covers appropriate themes, once again with the emphasis on visitor participation.

Furthermore, 250 m² of exhibition surface are dedicated to the exciting area of ‘Augmented Reality Storytelling’ under the title of CoSA_A(R)dventure. The conveying of knowledge takes place here by expanding reality through the use of AR glasses and shows a completely new and appealing approach to scientific and technical themes, particularly attractive for the youth target visitor group. In the adjacent CoSA_Coding Area, young programmers have the chance to apply their knowledge, and to pass it on, too. The ‘Escape Room’ (CoSA_Escape) in the historical Display Mine is concerned with resources of importance in the past, the present and the future.
