Delve in art history with Peter Kogler

Links to art history both more recent and in the past will be created in the Kunsthaus Graz from June 28, based around the works of Kogler. The exhibition Connected. Peter Kogler with ... shows the dense network that the Austrian artist references, ranging from Fernand Léger, Charlotte Perriand, George Antheil and Franz Pomassl up to Franz West.

The exhibition brings together works of the dawn of the century with contemporary works. Peter Kogler, known to many for the graphical ceiling design in Graz’ main railway station, has developed a new, extensive work for the Kunsthaus Graz, together with Franz Pomassl. Visitors re-discover themselves in a reproducible, programmed and mysteriously connected architectural and medial space. Alongside this, graphic works and paintings by Fernand Léger are on show, as well as furniture by Charlotte Perriand, archival materials by Hedy Lamarr, collaborative works by Kogler with Franz West, and stage models by Friedrich Kiesler. Besides Kogler’s new work, a central element of the exhibition is a reflection of the pioneering and revolutionary Ballet Mécanique. This work from the 1920s, which resonates to the present day, was a cooperation between the artists Fernand Léger as pictorial designer, Dudley Murphy as cameraman and George Antheil as composer. It is considered the first film montage planned in the Surrealist-Dadaist manner linked with mechanised music. Winfried Ritsch re-interprets the music to the film, staging a ‘machine-orchestra’, very much in the spirit of the original creator George Antheil. The solo exhibition was created in close collaboration with Peter Kogler himself, offering deep insights into the ideas informing his artistic world, which draw from a complexly woven network.
