Women’s art from Styria in the spotlight for the first time

With the exhibition Ladies First! Women Artists in and from Styria 1850–1950 the Neue Galerie Graz examines exclusively and for the first time women’s art production in Styria. From April 17th, the focus will be on the works and biographies of around 60 women artists, some well-known, others less so, from the period 1850 to 1950.

The exhibition Ladies First! sheds light on women’s art history from Styria in the period spanning 1850 to 1950: around 1850 the first generation of women are born for whom a career as an independent artist is even conceivable. Their artistic activity took place primarily within the scope of Austrian Mood Realism and the graphic art of Jugendstil. In the inter-war period, women artists increasingly gained independence; the situation in terms of education and opportunities for mounting exhibitions improved, while their artistic output was more or more treated as equal to that of their male colleagues. It is extraordinary that to date there has been no overview show of female art creation in Styria for this period. Ladies First! sets out to redress this imbalance and offers a first-ever survey of the creative output of Styrian women artists.
