Alpine hut from Limmeralm near Johnsbach
Styria
The hut is built of powerful timber logs and has three rooms. The entrance is located on the eaves side and leads into the main room where the open hearth with its big cauldron for the production of cheese is located. The room is flanked by two smaller rooms. One served as storage room for butter and cheese, while the other was used as living and bedroom. The hut has a steep rafter roof and is covered with wooden shingles.
In the Ennstal Valley, dairy farming was traditionally the work of women whose responsibility included tending the cattle and processing milk into butter and cheese. Only few had help from cow maids or farm boys.
