Pile of barrel staves

Styria

Built: 1980 (reproduction)

In order to produce high quality barrels, it is necessary to select the right woods, (oak, larch or spruce), and to dry them. The chosen wood was cut to the approximate size of a finished stave (the main part of the barrel), and then carefully stacked and allowed to dry for several years. Only then was the wood suitable for use in the manufacture of barrels.
