Dovecot, Schwarzmannshofen near Blumau

Styria

Built: 19th century
Reconstructed: 1978

Many farmsteads had their own dove cots. This dovecot has 48 nest holes in which the pigeons bred. There are a total of 168 openings through which the pigeons could enter and leave.

Some farmers also kept pigeons in pigeon lofts. Pigeons entered through small holes in the gable wall high under the eaves. Sometimes you may still see the narrow protruding ledges, or alighting boards, which farmers fitted to make it easier for the pigeons to land.
