Cross from Prätis near Poellau

Styria

Built: 18th century
Year of translocation: 1966

Crosses like these, with a wooden roof and panelled back, are still common in rural areas. Around Vorau, many of these wayside crosses featured what was generally referred to as a nail of the cross or indulgence nail. This religious tradition was first introduced by the Brotherhood of the Cross who were active in Vorau. Pilgrims passing the cross would offer prayers, ask for forgiveness, and on Fridays, in particular on Good Friday, also kiss the cross
