Oil press & corn mill, Winkl-Boden near Poellau
Styria
This building houses an oil press and a corn mill which were still in use in 1964.
It is of log construction with a steep saddle-back roof and traditional straw thatch cover. There are two overshot water wheels. One of the wheels powered the oil press in which linseeds were crushed. The mashed linseeds were then transferred to a tilt-hammer where the linseed oil was extracted. Linseed oil has been widely used as an effective remedy against a variety of afflictions in humans and animals. Today linseed oil is being rediscovered by gourmet cooks and increasingly used for cooking and salad dressings. The second water wheel drives the corn mill.
