Drying rack, Dellach in the Gailtal Valley

Carinthia

Built: 1867
Year of translocation: 1975

Drying racks like this one were once a common feature in many regions where periods of fine weather do not normally last long enough for hay, straw, bean stalks, maize etc. to dry in the field. Drying racks of this kind are still found today in parts of Carinthia, in Slovenia, east and south Tyrol, Switzerland and in Scandinavia.

This drying rack from Dellach, which was built in 1867, is unusual in that it consists of two racks, placed parallel to each other, which are spanned by a roof to create a sheltered storage space for farm machinery and implements.
